There's no doubt that having a doula present at your birth is incredibly important for both mental and physical support! Did you know that studies have shown when a doula is present at childbirth providing continuous support, there is a:
39% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
15% increase in the likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth
10% decrease in the use of medication for pain relief
Shorter labors by an average of 41 minutes
38% decrease in baby’s risk of a low Apgar
31% decrease in the risk of dissatisfaction in the birth experience
Doula support is worth it! So how can you go about finding the doula who is just the right fit for you? Here are four ways to get started:
1. Services and certifications - What doula certification programs has she completed, and what different trainings has she attended? Does she add to her knowledge with ongoing continued education?
2. Reviews and word of mouth - Personal experience will always be the strongest recommendation. Find her client reviews on her website or on Google. If she was recommended by someone you know, ask that person about their experience.
3. Find out what’s included - Ask lots of questions. What support is provided before and after birth? What birthing environments does she primarily work in? Do you share the same philosophies surrounding the process of childbirth? Do you share the same personal beliefs and values?
4. Know your doula - Find someone you would be friends with. She must be totally trustworthy and bring stability and comfort to any situation. She should feel dependable and familiar. Ask yourself, Would you feel comfortable going to the bathroom in front of her? (You might!)
A doula will share in one of the most vulnerable, intimate experiences a family will ever have together. Your memories of your birth will inevitably include her support, the words she said, and the things she did. She will become part of your birth story. Choose your doula wisely!
If you’re in the Northern Colorado area, of course I have to recommend my doula - April Myers at Cherish Birthing! She attended my first baby’s birth and I am so thrilled to continue working with her for my second. Check out her services if you are local!
